Frequently Asked Questions
Are custom racks available? .....
Yes, our in-house engineers and product development team can help with design and development and manufacture custom racks. Applicable fees vary depending on designs
and certifications required.
What is the typical lead time? .....
For non-stocking program standard racks the lead time is 5 to 6 weeks. For customers participating in the EnviroGuard stocking program, standard racks are available to
ship within one week. The lead time for custom racks depends on a number of variables including the scope of the project.
How do I determine battery rack type to use? .....
Many factors can go into this decision including room lay out, floor space, aisle width constraints, and most importantly the specific battery and manufacturer to name a few.
The length required also depends on the number of batteries as aforementioned which
is based on the overall system voltage requirements.
How do I determine my sites seismic level? .....
With the implementation of the International Building Code (IBC) and the cross
referencing of the Uniform Building Code (UBC), the determination of a site's seismic
level is based on a number of factors that must be addressed and verified by the
appropriate specifying engineers involved with the project. EnviroGuard has
in-house engineering services to validate this requirement with said engineers to ensure
the appropriate rack solution is delivered.
Typical factors needed to determine Seismic Level will include:
- Ss = Short Period Acceleration value for the site
- Site Design Class – this determines what type of ground the structure will be on (Classes A – F available)
- Is the facility classified as essential, which means that it must be operational
after a seismic event?
The easiest way to determine the Seismic values for your site in the Continental US is to
us the USGS's Seismic Design Maps Application located at: http://geohazards.usgs.gov/designmaps/us/application.php
This application requires you to input the following values for your site:
- Design Code Reference Document: IBC 2012
- Soil Classification: D is default if unknown
- Risk Category: I, II, or III for non-essential, OR IV for essential
- Enter your zip code in the search box at the top right of the map and select the
arrow to the right.
The program outputs the basic seismic parameters that can be used to match to the
rack qualification parameters to see which seismic level is appropriate.
What standards are EnviroGuard racks tested to? .....
Non-Seismic Racks
- CA PE Analyzed and verified to IBC 2009
Light Seismic Racks
- IBC 2012, SDS= 0.75, Site Class D, Essential
- IEEE-693
- UBC 1994 / 1997 (for historical specification compliance)
Heavy Seismic Racks
- BC 2012, SDS = 2.00, Site Class D, Essential
- IEEE-693
- UBC 1994 / 1997 (for historical specification compliance)
Future product development will include specific racks to meet NEBS, OSHPD and NRC certifications.
What is the difference between UBC and IBC rated battery racks? .....
UBC (Uniform Building Code) only qualified racks with forces applied to the rack in two
axes, front to back and side to side. IBC (International Building Code) qualifies racks
with forces applied in three axes, front to back, side to side, and vertical. The additional
forces applied to the IBC rated racks typically require many of the IBC rated racks to potentially require increased structural integrity than their UBC counterparts for the
same installation site. The differences between UBC and IBC rated racks are most
notable as seismic levels increase.
Why did EnviroGuard design racks to also meet IEEE 693? .....
IEEE-693 is a substation rack specification used by many Utilities. Many of their
recommended standards are similar to the IBC rack levels required for testing, therefore
the racks are qualified to that standard as part of the IBC 2012 testing process.
Qualifying the racks to IEEE-693 allows specification compliance for that specific
industry for ease of customer selection and suitability since IEEE recommendations are commonly followed throughout the mission critical industry.
Does EnviroGuard supply the floor anchors for the racks? .....
No, however it is important to note all EnviroGuard rack configurations have been designed in accordance with AISC 360-05 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings.
Floor anchors must be supplied by the installer of the rack. Different codes and different
types of flooring require different anchor types and sizes. The anchor type must be
determined and approved by the appropriate specifying engineers involved with the
project.
How do I know if I need spill containment? .....
For flooded batteries or VLA, spill containment is always required by law. IFC 609
requires the acid resistant surface to have four inch high walls extending at least one
inch beyond the edge of the rack. There must also be passive neutralization and
absorption present within the containment system or a spill response kit within the room. Industry best practices are to include a UL Listed spill containment system appropriate
to the application.
What is an integrated environmental control system? .....
One example is a patent pending EnviroGuard spill containment system that eliminates
that need to anchor walls or rails to the floor. The rails that hold the liner walls up
attach to the rack frame saving installation time.
What is the standard required aisle width between battery racks? .....
IFC typically requires a minimum of 36 inches for aisle space between battery racks.
Always check with the authority having jurisdiction.
From a quality assurance standpoint what type of metal is being used to manufacture racks? .....
Traceable ASTM-A36 up to ASTM-A500 Grade Steel in accordance with RoHS compliance standards.
The rack frames are fully welded and come powder coated with acid
resistant ANSI 61 Grey paint. Bead blasting is also available.
