EnviroGuard Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary

August 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of EnviroGuard and a lot has changed: new battery technologies, new industry appreciation for spill containment, and a world with an increasing need for battery rooms to power our online lives. What hasn’t changed is EnviroGuard’s emphasis on customer service, made in America product quality and dedication to educating its customers and the industry. Read CEO Doug Frazier’s retrospective on the last 30 years.

Featured Product: Easy Configuration of our Certified Battery Racks

EnviroGuard has 22,000 battery racks to choose from using our online sizer. When you need the ultimate in battery rack stability for flooded lead acid (VLA) or valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries EnviroGuard delivers.

The EnviroGuard Rack Series includes non-seismic and seismic battery racks that are certified via shake table test. They are tested to meet UBC Zone 1-4, International Building Code (IBC) 2012, IEEE 693 moderate and high standards, and Telcordia Technologies GR-63-CORE & GR-1089. One of the reasons they meet these standards is our welded frames which offer maximum strength compared to competitors’ bolted together models.

All racks are patented adjustable to accommodate most battery makes and models. EnviroGuard racks offer a patented integrated UL-listed spill containment system that eliminates the need to drill or glue the-containment to the floor when installing the barrier.

Use our rack selector to easily build out your seismic or non-seismic rack system.

Tech Talk: Neutralizing and Absorption Pillows

Neutralizing and absorption products are critical to battery spill containment, but not all pillows are created equal. There are two types of pillows:

Pillow
  • UL-recognized pillows conform to ASTM 648-99 which specifies how fast the pillow fabric will burn.
  • Non-flammable pillows meet different requirements of ASTM2058 standard (which is the basis of FM 4955) for non-flammability. These pillows are self-extinguishing and far exceed the flammability of the UL-recognized pillow standards. Non-flammable pillow video

Pillows lose their effectiveness over time or are contaminated with battery acid and need to be replaced.

We recommend that organizations conduct an annual site assessment where pillows are examined. We also recommend that pillows are replaced whenever a battery is replaced. We’ve even extended our warranty to 20 years to match the lifetime of a battery.

Here are some additional pillow resources to help with maintenance, recycling and optimizing your spill containment system.

EnviroGuard University: Highlight on Training

We are committed to educating the industry on important safety topics, skill sets and regulations that impact battery room management

EnviroGuard University is our learning management system that houses the training and educational videos we have developed. We add a new training video every month, on average. Check out the complete EnviroGuard video training library here.

Our monthly training highlight is course EGS1120 Battery Room Safety – Hydrogen (.5 credit hours). Hydrogen gas monitors measure hydrogen in the air and provide compliance assurance and notification of necessary corrective action should hydrogen gas approach explosive levels. In this video series, learn the principles of ventilation and how to specify a hydrogen detection system for the battery room.

Industry News

Battery technology is evolving and along with are changes to battery standards and safety codes. Electricity Today Magazine has a primer on battery codes and standards that govern battery safety and compliance. Read more here.

Even with new battery chemistries becoming available, there’s still a lot of growth predicted for lead acid batteries, according to a new report from Fortune Business Insights. The global lead acid battery market is expected to grow from $45.84 billion in 2023 to $65.18 billion by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.2% over that period. Read more in this press release.

EnviroGuard has a new partnership with H2scan to bring the company’s advanced hydrogen sensor technology into more battery room applications. Hydrogen off gassing is a significant safety issue for battery rooms and the H2scan HY-ALERTA 5021 sensor is the only one that requires no calibrations for more than 10 years. Read the press release for more details on our partnership.
